When I was eleven-years-old, my father introduced me to the game. After work, he would take me to the golf course to play nine holes. Eventually, I would tell him to drop me off at the country club to either work on my game on the range and putting green or on the golf course. Thus, I developed a disciplined work ethic: I would enjoy stay at the country club until sunset to continuously work on my golf game.
Although I understood the mechanics of golf, I didn't realize that my mentality was the most important factor in the game. On November 2019, I competed in a two-day tournament at Seaview Country Club. The first day, I shot a 95. I became disappointed in myself; however, I realized that the score was irrelevant, and I would will myself to do better. The next day, I fought back in the rain and shot a 79. Thus, I moved up from last place to finishing second in my age division.
I learned that the mind was a very powerful weapon. Challenges are constantly thrown in life, in this case, the golf course, for people to mess up and fail. However, it's ultimately the individual who controls how to handle the situation and what to do next.
That's why I love the game of golf. I enjoy the challenge. Golf is like running a marathon: You have to constantly push yourself to not only finish the round, but also, will yourself to do your best, especially, when obstacles are thrown at you.
