My name is Reese Parfet and I am Junior at Hope Christian High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am a lifelong student at Hope Christian; I started in Pre-K, and simply moved across the street when I transitioned from the elementary, to the middle school, and now the high school.
My love of golf started with my dad and my grandpa when I was seven. They would take me to the course and let me hit the ball with them while they played. The big joke was that playing golf allowed just the three of us to have something to share, as my mom and granny do not play. I joined the golf team in middle school, but really started to excel the summer before my freshman year.
My freshman season started off great! The high school coach was a camp councilor and teacher who had watched me grow up since kindergarten, so working with him felt natural. We were at the range three or four times a week during the hot summer days and my game rapidly improved and he introduced me to the rest of the girls. The team consisted of two senior, two juniors and myself and they welcomed me as if I was their sister.
The fall season was amazing, I played in all five tournaments with my score counting in three of our four qualifying rounds for the New Mexico State Tournament. However, all that changed at the first of the year. My grandfather passed away right after the start of the new year and my coach retired right before the start of the spring season. I learned really fast the importance of my team, as I did not take the loss well. They were right there supporting me the entire time.
Needless to say, the spring season was a true learning experience. The new coach moved me to the bench for three tournaments, including the District and State Championships, in favor of the upper class-men even though my scores were better. I realized how much I loved this sport and that I never wanted to sit the bench again.
Shortly after the end of the season, I started working with my new swing coach. The hard work paid off, I was ranked second on the team, we once again qualified for the team state tournament, and I qualified for the individual state tournament as well in the fall season. Due to COVID-19 we did not play the spring season or tournaments.
I understand the importance of hard work, both on the course and in the classroom. I have overcome personal challenges, as well as athletic to become a high performing student athlete.
