Hello, my name is Katie Lee and I am in the first graduating class of 2020 at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, OR. Throughout my high school career, I have improved my golf and mental game significantly. With the opening of Mountainside High School in 2017, I had to transfer schools after my Freshman Year. I have been the oldest class at my school since its opening and this has given me the opportunity to be involved with starting many programs. When it comes to our golf team, we only had three varsity players my sophomore year. This was a drastic change from having upperclassmen to look up to and learn from the year prior at Southridge High School. Despite not being able to compete as a team at tournaments, we all worked hard and I made it to the OSAA State Tournament. Junior Year, our team still did not have any seniors, but we had many newcomers join the team. Many of them were new to golf, but I made sure to include them in mini games and encourage them. I loved having them and finally being able to create a team environment. We set weekly goals together and learned from each other on a day to day basis. This bond helped us compete at a competitive level in a tough league and finish 5th in the state as a team. Going through this journey of creating a team and bonding with them has instilled in me a desire to play golf in college. I am dedicated to take my golf game to the next level and I know that I have the athletic capability and competitive nature to make this a reality.
In school, I am in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program and involved in numerous leadership activities. I have been in Student Government as the ASB Treasurer for the last two years. Being in Leadership and working to create a positive culture at the new school has helped me to learn leadership principles and grow as a servant leader. I work to apply this mindset everywhere I go, even on the golf course. I have been working with my coach, parents, and my teammates as the Team Captain to get everyone's needs met and opinions heard. Sometimes this means saying the thing that everyone is thinking, but nobody can say... It's hard for me as well, but I will do anything for my team, if it will benefit them in the long run.
I am also involved in numerous clubs. I started Model United Nations, Key Club, Yearbook, National Honor Society, and Dude. Be Nice (Random Acts of Kindness) Club at Mountainside High School. Being the president of numerous clubs was difficult at first, but they helped me grow as a leader. Different from the classroom setting, I was able to apply myself and find my own leadership style without relying on teacher guidance. I am currently the president of three clubs at my school and the Lieutenant Governor of Division 65 for Key Club International. Leading others to create an inclusive, positive community is something that is very important to me and I strive to do wherever I go. I aspire to be a well-rounded athlete, leader, and friend to those around me. My passion and love for golf is what drives me to continue to compete at a high level and work to reach my full potential.
