My name is Raina Jones and I am a Junior at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg, PA. My collegiate goals and aspirations include attending a university to obtain a degree in nursing, and then later pursue specialization as a nurse anesthetist. During my undergraduate studies, my dream is to be able to play golf at the collegiate level. Playing team sports has been important to me since my earliest years in school when I began playing softball and soccer. I was introduced to golf at a young age by a family member and fell in love with the sport. I was drawn to the challenge that golf offers and, eventually, I made the decision to focus on golf as the primary sport I wanted to pursue and devote my time and energy.
Despite the high school I attend being one of the largest in western Pennsylvania, girl's golf is not a sport offered by the school district. Without a girl's team as an option, I made the choice as freshman to try out and make the boys team. Competing as the only girl on the all male team has shown my ability to overcome obstacles and persevere in my sport despite the challenges faced during competition and the team dynamic as the only female. Being a part of the golf team has helped to foster my leadership abilities and develop individual strength and determination while also supporting and encouraging my teammates. I am an extremely hard worker and approach the game with a focused drive to succeed.
Throughout high school as a student athlete and holding a part-time job, I have earned and remained in the top ten percent of my class since my freshman year taking honors and AP courses. I have also volunteered as a Youth leader/teacher at our Church vacation bible school for 3 summers.
