Hi and welcome to my profile! I am Emily Hunt and I am in the class of 2020 at Coppell High School.
I have had an unusual journey of discovering golf. Prior to my freshman year, I had been a competitive Irish Dancer for almost 10 years and had played various seasons of soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track on and off over the years. Given my love of dance and as high school course sheets were passed out, everyone expected that I would do dance. Little did anyone know that the few times I had been at a golf course, I had a fire beginning to grow to try something new. That March as selection sheets were being passed out, I contacted the high school coaches and told them that I was interested in trying out for the team. They told me tryouts were going to be the first week of May. I realized more that my drive was building. I contacted the local golf course and set up an evaluation. I knew I had less than a month and half of the drive and determination to make the team. My world was completely shaken when the high school coaches placed me on the junior varsity team, even though I had never shot 9 holes, let alone 18. I was thrilled for the challenge ahead. I enrolled in NTXJRPGA and shot my first tournament with a whopping 121. Slowly but surely, I began to study more of the game over the summer. In the fall at my first JV tournament, I shot a 104. Over the next 16 days I dropped my score by 11 strokes; then breaking into the 80’s only weeks later. As I continued to work, my scores continued to stay in the 80’s and occasionally a 90 becoming the number one golfer on JV and the alternate to Varsity. As District play opened, my coach began to have be play more. At the District Tournament, I placed 10th overall making the 1st Team All District Team as well as my team advancing to Regionals.
My sophomore year at our opening fall tournament I shot a 79 in the tournament, only to fall short later that tournament to any injury that would sideline me for the next few months. I used that time to continue to not only grow as a player but as mentor to my younger teammates and other young female golfers at the golf course. They saw me rehab and study the game. When District play resumed that January, I was ready to go. When we resumed, I earned my spot back as the top golfer on the team. I fought hard to not only stay number 1 but to see my team do well. I continued to maintain my scores in the low 80’s. At the Spring 2018 District Tournament I placed 6th overall; which again was 1st Team All District and a regional qualifier as well. My team again qualified for regionals.
For me, golf hasn’t been just about golf but all the factors adding up to me absolutely falling in love with it! The fact that I am competing against myself to get better is driving me to be a better golfer, student of the game and leader. I compete to force myself to do better and at the same time be a reliable contributor to the team score. I also get to teach younger golfers. This summer when I turned 16 I was allowed to be an instructor at the golf course where I started! I got to use the lessons from JRPGA to develop their skills and work alongside the pros that had taught me and continue to be my private instructors. I was only 1 of 2 girl instructors at the course which allowed me the opportunity to actually teach the girl classes and be a positive role model to them as well. As much as I love playing, the lessons that I was learning from instructing were invaluable.
Currently I have a 5.0 GPA. At school, I am actively involved in NHS, working with special needs peers, organizing days of volunteering at local food pantries, designing various organizations spirit shirts and taking AP classes and dual credit classes at the local junior college. I am a youth leader at my church, have been on a Mission Trip and I stay involved by serving as an altar server, small group leader and more. I also have two jobs. I am employed at the golf course and I also work at the local nursing home as a server in their dining hall.
One would think that this is a lot, but I’m striving to be the best person I can be while exposing myself to as many life opportunities as possible. I take my job serious of improving myself and when I am able to represent myself, my family, church, school, my team and my sport as a strong well-rounded female I am proud to do so.
