My name is Carly Glover (2002 DOB, 2020 graduate). I am passionate about hockey and love playing the game. I know it is late in your process, but I desire to play Division I Women's Hockey. My family and I are exploring the idea of taking a post-grad year to further my development as I have only been playing competitive hockey for the past four years. I am typically utilized as a power forward, but I am frequently called on to play defense when needed.
I am currently a senior at Kodiak High School and have attended the USA Hockey National Player Development Camp in St. Cloud for the past two years. I was the leading scorer at the 19U USA National Tournament in Marlborough, MA in 2018. In October of this year, I tied 3rd for points in the 19U Division at the Detroit Two Nations Showcase. As a youth, I played a variety of sports including baseball, soccer, and football. Throughout high school I have played softball and run cross country and track, and I have competed at the State level for all.
Growing up in remote Alaska has provided me with some unique experiences. I grew up playing on our outdoor rink, and consider myself lucky to get to play outdoors all winter. I do not shy away from hard work. This past summer I undertook--and conquered--a challenge of climbing 7 mountains (a combined 31,000 ft. gain/loss) in 24 hours. For the past couple of summers, I have had the opportunity to help guide adventure excursions out to a remote river on Kodiak Island as well as be an integral part of the construction process of the lodge. But it’s not all work, as I get to ride ATVs all summer and fish on my family's boat on the Pacific Ocean.
When I turned four, my parents bought me my first set of hockey gear, and I was set for my first season. The local parks and rec “season” was only 6 weeks of pick-up style games with little or no skills practice, but I enjoyed it. At the beginning of the 2012 season, the City of Kodiak Parks and Rec Department decided to drop hockey in Kodiak, but my father stepped up, and with absolutely zero hockey background, he took over the program from the city. He got the Kodiak Hockey League affiliated with USA Hockey and started learning about the game.
Both my parents work full time. My mother is a science teacher at our middle school, and my father is a retired Navy SEAL and continues to train young SEAL recruits. Aside from being the president of our young hockey league, he also volunteers as head coach of my 18U boys team. I have an older sister, Hannah, who is playing college hockey at Trinity Western University in British Columbia, and a little brother who plays hockey in Kodiak for our 14U house team.
In December of 2015 my father flew me from our home on Kodiak Island to Anchorage for this tryout he heard about. It was my first time ever skating with all girls, and boy were they good! I was so nervous. The tryout happened to be the Affiliate selects, and I was chosen to represent Alaska at the Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs that year as a 14, and subsequently 15, 16, and 17 year old. My 16 and 17 years I was selected to go to the National Player Development Camp in St. Cloud.
Since the 2016 season, in addition to skating daily with my local 18U boys team, I have played for Cristy Hickel’s Alaska All-Stars 19AA Team and have placed as high as third at Nationals in the tier II division where I was the leading scorer as a 15 year old. While my parents have provided me with chances to travel each year, we feel my exposure has been limited due to the fact that the population in Alaska cannot support a full fledged tier I team as well as the difficulty of traveling from a remote island in Alaska.
I absolutely have the talent, ability, and drive to be an asset on a Division I team and look forward to proving myself on the ice.
