Personal Statement

I started playing hockey when I was 5 years old after I went to watch my brother play in a game at the end of a summer hockey camp at our hometown rink in Cloquet, MN. Jamie Langenbrunner had just returned home to Cloquet with the silver medal from the Olympics. He took pictures with all of the local players in the camp after the game had finished. He let my brother wear the medal. Right then and there I told my dad I was going to play hockey. I haven't looked back since.

When I was 11 years old I transitioned from playing youth hockey in my local association to playing year round hockey and training for Burggraf Skating in Moorhead, MN. Playing for Frank Burggraf greatly raised my hockey IQ and ability level. Frank pushed me to play with and against girls that were much older than me. We played in 16U and 19U tournaments while I was still in 6th grade. I was by far the youngest player on the ice every game.

When I was in 8th grade my family moved back to where we are from, the Duluth, MN area. I immediately started skating with the Cloquet/Esko/Carlton Lumberjacks during the summer. I made the varsity high school team that fall. I was 1 of 4 defenseman that suited varsity. I played about half the minutes in every game. I was on the top power-play and penalty kill unit for most of the season. After my 9th grade season I was named to the K1 Stars of the North All-Star game.

My 10th grade season just ended. My team had a phenomenal year. Our record was 27-4, including a 17 game winning streak. We advanced to the Minnesota Girls State High School Hockey Tournament. We had great success at the tournament finishing runner-up for Minnesota Class A. After the state championship game I was named to the Wells Fargo All-State Tournament Team. For the season I scored 28 points from my position on the blue line. I was also named to the All-Conference Team and again played in the K1 Stars of the North All-Star game.

The coaches that I have played for have said that I am a natural skater and that I have great vision of the ice. I believe that my best assets are my ability to use my hands, vision and feet to move the puck efficiently to my teammates. I flourish in a puck control system that focuses on flow, puck control, and movement.

I am a leader in the classroom. I take my academics seriously. I carry a 4.0 GPA and challenge myself with the most rigorous classes my school offers. Currently I am registering for many College in the Schools and PSEO classes as I look forward to my 11th grade year.

Some people play hockey. I consider myself a hockey player. Being an eighth grader on varsity was a transition I was ready for thanks to my time with Burggraf Skating. My 9th grade season was better than my 8th grade season at both the team and individual level. My 10th grade season was a season to remember.

I know that I must continue to improve. I took 1 week off after this season ended to recharge. I have been working towards continual improvement as an athlete since that week ended. I am committed to the process. As a teammate, I am concerned with team and concept. As an individual, I want to find out how far I can go with hockey. I will not let myself be outworked or out disciplined. I know these attributes will help me at the next level. I am motivated to join a program where I will be challenged in the classroom and where I can contribute and continue to grow as a hockey player.
