I was introduced to hockey when I was 6 years old when my brother started playing. I did not have trouble with transitioning from soccer to hockey, besides feeling looked down on since I was a girl. Taking that and working harder, listening to my coaches, and making great friendships, I put the boys I had played with in their place and showed them that my place wasn’t at the bottom.
I’ve had a lot of “High’s and Low’s” while playing hockey. Being looked at like I wasn’t good enough when I played with the boys, the board thinking that a girl’s team would not be a good investment so they decided not to have one, playing a season with eight skaters and one goalie. These struggles have led to some of the best parts of my life like making incredible friends and having some opportunities to show up the boys. This past season has been one of the most fun that I ever had on a team. Having only nine girls required us to be in top shape so that we had the stamina required to finish games strong against teams with full benches at the U19 level. We faced true U19 teams with a roster of mostly 15 year olds. One of my favorite memories this year was my goal against one of these stronger teams. We also kept things fun by having theme days each game. This season strengthened my self-value, confidence, and attention to detail as well as provided my favorite season of teamwork.
My family and friends are very important to me. They are all so supportive of anything I do. Being able to share one of my passions with them and then being to play with my brother and 4 younger sisters is great.
I am looking forward to starting my college career and aspire to have a career in sports medicine or the medical field where I feel I can help others. I want to do something that helps people after I graduate. I’m thinking of going into sports medicine or to become a doctor, but I am not sure of specifically what yet. I believe continuing to play hockey in college will help me be successful academically, socially, and still feel connected to my family even if I am away. I believe that I have the skills to be a good contributor to the team and will help keep everyone positive. I will be continuing to push myself, and learn new aspects of this sport from teammates and coaches to achieve this goal.
Thank you for taking the time and viewing my profile.
