My name is Landree McClure. I am 17 years old and a Senior at Golden High School in Golden, Colorado. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t play lacrosse; I’ve had a stick in my hands for 10 years! Growing up in Colorado, where it is expected that you are an outdoors person, I spent most of my time outside in the yard playing lacrosse with my neighbors, my dad, and my sister. As I became more and more passionate about the sport, you could find me in the yard practicing stick tricks, my non-dominate hand, and overall exploring my abilities as a player. From there, my family and I committed our schedules towards not only recreational lacrosse, but club lacrosse as well. I have played for a club team for 7 years.
Having played lacrosse since 2nd grade, I approached high school with confidence. I made the varsity team freshman year and have played ever since. Sophomore year, I was featured in the MaxPreps Weekly Honor Roll and titled as National Athlete of the Week. The article talks about how I balance my life as a student-athlete, all while managing Type 1 Diabetes. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in the summer before high school. Diabetes is something I have had to persevere through, however, it motivates me to become the best version of myself. Lacrosse helps me maintain my blood sugar levels while keeping in shape. Diabetes hasn’t stopped me. Freshman year, I produced 13 goals and 8 assists and as Sophomore year came around, I became the No. 2 scoring option. Unfortunately my Junior season was cancelled.
My experience with my club team, the Colorado Outlaws, has also been very successful. This past summer, we played in the open division and of our 18 games, our record was 13-4-1. I love playing with my club team because our dynamic is so special and rare. I love playing in tournaments with this team as we all work toward one common goal. I am the No. 2 scoring option, attack starter, and captain. We have won the Denver Shootout, Rocky Mountain Jamboree, Capital Cup and the Summer Slam.
Speaking academically, I am an exceptional student. I have a 4.3 weighted cumulative GPA. It is very important to me to balance academics, sports and other aspects of my life as I have set many goals for myself throughout my high school experience. I hope to carry my academic success into college. I am not 100% decided on my major quite yet. I hope to study something that I am passionate about and will take me far in life. I also am involved in many extracurricular activities and volunteering. I am an American Diabetes Association Youth Ambassador as well as the co-host of Murphy and Landree’s Halfway To St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser. This fundraiser is very important to me because not only does it spread awareness about Juvenile Diabetes but it helps kids like me with it. I love being able to get involved with the T1D community.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me!
