Hi, my name is Mackenzie Weir, but teammates call me Mack. I am a lacrosse athlete who currently plays both women’s field lacrosse and men’s box lacrosse at the national level. I represent two Club Teams, Oshawa Lady Blue Knights in the OWFL and Whitby Warriors in the OLA. I also play for two travel teams each fall, however, both teams were suspended for 2020 and 2021 seasons due to Covid 19. I started playing lacrosse at the age of 6, shortly after attending my first NLL Toronto Rock lacrosse game where post-game I said “I want to do that”, and my parents obliged. I have a strong passion for the game, which drives me to take my game to the next level. Personally, I thrive on competition! Lacrosse has taught me the value of time management, teamwork, and setting goals. The sport has already given me so much to be thankful for. While the traveling has been fun and the friendships are cherished, it’s NOT enough to satisfy the hunger I have to compete in this sport.
When I'm not on the field or doing homework, I can be found either in the gym, going for runs throughout my neighborhood, or shooting and dodging in my father’s warehouse. Academically I hold a 4.0 GPA and was selected as Class Valedictorian for my school in Grade 8. My 3-year outlook has me playing College lacrosse in the USA and being the best athlete/teammate I can be. My current career interests lie in the areas of Criminology, Sciences and Psychology. I am a motivated, hard-working team player who loves to bring out the best in my teammates, which also brings out the best in me. Becoming a Level 1 Women’s Field Lacrosse referee not only supplemented my game skill IQ, but also allowed me to passionately give back to our next generation of players.
I round out my athleticism by playing for my High School varsity basketball team, as well as downhill skiing most weekends. Working part-time as a Certified Level 1 ski instructor also aids in my fitness.
Having worked my way up through Girl Guides (Scouts Canada) and being issued the top award of the Canada Cord, I remain very active in my community and have been for several years. I love volunteering and participating in community activities such as eco clean-ups, helping out at local soup kitchens, and much more. Last year I had the amazing opportunity to get involved and create friendships with members from the Team Kenya U19 National Team when they came to Canada for the World U19 Championships. I was able to help fundraise and spoke directly to local businesses to secure sponsorship and the donation of game supplies to augment Team Kenya’s associated costs. Those donations were to enable growth in the sport within Kenya and ensure we’d see them represented at the next World Championship. Overall it was such an amazing opportunity and one that I wouldn't have had without the sport of lacrosse.
Most recently I was accepted to the Durham Region Youth in Policing initiative. Throughout this program, I have hands-on learning experiences that emphasize the importance of leadership, teamwork, and community engagement. I have also achieved several certificates along the way. Some of these certificates include Leadership, Diversity, Standard First Aid/ CPR training etc. I am most excited to participate in community-driven events and initiatives such as the Coldest Night of the Year charity fundraiser.
I owe a big thank you to my parents for being my support network, always believing in me, and helping me reach my goals. Thank you for the countless hours of driving. I know I would not be playing at the level I am today without your love and support. Additionally, I thank my coaches for all they have passed on to me. The chances they have taken in assisting me and your challenges of me will not go to waste.
I look forward to my next challenges both athletically and academically. Bring it on world!!!
