Despite the boys lacrosse program at my high school containing three teams and holding 2 back-to-back state championships, our girls program only has one team. Along with our small program comes a low commitment level which often leads to a large number of losses. Although, while some may call a this a negative, in my eyes, it’s a positive. As a child, my basketball team lost game after game. The repeated defeat got boring for me and I told my mother that I didn’t want to play anymore. I whined and refused to go to practices because my team wasn’t good. However, being in the same situation in high school has built my character, sportsmanship, and maturity level. 2 years ago I would have “accidentally” missed the players hand in the handshake line after each game. Now, I have noticed myself having a more positive attitude after each game and congratulating the other team for being better than us.
These traits will greatly help me as I move into college. I’m becoming an adult, and building a positive attitude and good sportsmanship is more important to me than winning every game. Being grumpy and negative won’t change the outcome of the game. Instead of being frustrated with the opposing team or even mine, I have learned to focus that motivation on myself to get better for the next game.
