My name is Felicia Marcozzi and I am looking to row collegiately! I started rowing during the spring of my freshman year and I fell in love with the sport. I also rowed during the spring season of my sophomore year, but I was left wanting more. I decided that I wanted to become a better athlete and the best way to accomplish that was to row year-round. My junior year is the first time that I trained all year and I have blossomed already. I personally think this is because I am a very coachable athlete who likes to get work done. In order to be satisfied with my work, I have become an extremely determined athlete who likes to beat personal goals and challenge other teammates.
My club coach this year has worked very hard to instill "grit" into each of his athletes, and I think this has really resonated with me. I am able to push through the pain to come out on top and I know this is because of the grittiness that I have acquired. This applies in the classroom as well. I have always worked hard to get good grades and I plan on continuing that trend through my college career. My parents always made sure that I put in a lot of work because they sent me to great schools where I learned how to be a good student.
My father was a High School State Heavyweight Wrestling Champion in Delaware who went on to wrestle at the Division 1 level, University of New Mexico on scholarship. in high school, he was a 3 sport athlete achieving All-State in all 3 sports, specifically, football, wrestling, shot put and discus. I have always been an athlete since age 5. He coached me starting with t-ball with the boys, then softball every spring. As soon as third grade came about in the fall, cross country was my choice through middle school. Basketball was my winter sport from 3rd through 8th grade. I had a couple of years of Irish Dancing, as well. Then high school came around and the plan was to continue with 3 sports a year with Cross Country, Indoor track, and rowing in the spring. I finally decide to stay with rowing year round for my junior year and forward.
We have always laughed at how I was the only 3rd grader I know whose dad would be out in the park with a whistle and stop watch "encouraging" me to run sprints and distance. From push-ups to sit-ups, no other parent would put their child through the rigors of training for softball, basketball, and cross country. I say that humorously, but he really has instilled what hard work, dedication, commitment to excellence and the attitude of a champion is in me and my siblings. I love him and wouldn't have it any other way.
Rowing is the sport where hard work and dedication really pays off, and I would not have it any other way. I look forward to going to practice every day to improve my scores and become a fitter person. I cannot wait to go to college and join a team full of other girls that feel the same way so we can push each other to get better.
