I first joined the winter training program run by our crew team in order to build leg strength to help with horse-back riding. However, do to knee problems, I was unable to continue erging, and my coaches convinced me to stay on the team as a coxswain. After my first 2k as a coxswain, I knew coxing was my new-found sport. My love for the sport grew even more when spring started. I've come to realize that coxing is my hidden talent and something that I would love to continue to do in college.
I realized that my experience riding horses has helped me become a better coxswain. As a rider, I had to learn how to deal with other people and animals around me. The lessons I learned in awareness made learning how to be a safe coxswain much easier. Riding also taught me how to handle difficult situations. Anytime there is a dangerous and/or hectic situation, I think back to my riding days and remember how I handled a stubborn horse. I always react calmly and quickly.
I am hardworking, trusting, and understanding. I always push myself to do the best I can in everything I do. I've learned to work hard to get what I want in life, whether it be grades or the top boat. I believe that my good grades and GPA are a reflection of that.
I'm also someone who likes to lead rather than follow. I work hard to make sure the people around me remain safe and follow direction, on and off the water. I am a leader on the water because as a coxswain, I am an extension of the coach and next year I have the chance to prove myself even more as a co-captain. Off the water, I am a member of my student council.
I want to go to a college that will provide me the opportunity to challenge myself and also offer a welcoming community that will allow me to be myself.
