Personal Statement

My name is JOSIE DIETRICH and I am 2024 graduate with Camp Randall Rowing Club in Madison, WI. Although I am new to the sport of rowing, I am not new to being a disciplined, competitive, high-level athlete. I am a retired Level 10 gymnast who is ready to excel in rowing. My coaches comment that I'm progressing quickly with solid technique. I am a hard worker and eager to apply my knowledge and strengths to this exciting sport! I am 5'9", 130 lbs.

Rowing Update:  I completed my fall season as a varsity rower in 2023 and I continue to grow! I have experienced every seat in the boat with various teammates. Coaches tell me that I have composure when I row. I have been training this winter season and also will compete in the CrossFit Open. I am excited about tank days, Spring Break Training in TN and spring regattas. I have been accepted at many amazing schools and continue to research the best fit to make a decision.

For the past few months, I have been training with Martha C. Laugen, Catalyst Rowing, who still races as a master. My time with her has been excellent. Here is feedback about what I am focusing on during our training:

"Josie is working on integrating a bit more leverage into her stroke - utilizing the strength and capacity that comes from her natural strength and long limbs and funneling that strength through a more efficient stroke. Specifically, looking at more fully engaging the leg drive (vs. over working w/ upper body); using lats to connect strong leg drive to oar handle movement and optimizing catch position more consistently (no extra lunge/reach at catch, setting body angle early in the recovery). I am seeing improvements here that will continue to become second nature with more drills and mindful time on the rower."

These are the strengths I bring to rowing:

  • Love of training and perseverance to progress
  • Attention to form, details, and technique
  • Years of core focused strength building
  • Learned proper lifting mechanics
  • Solid understanding of nutrition and how to fuel
  • Developed a strong, lean body
  • Ability to balance, maintain control, and utilize my power
  • Considerable mental strength and the ability to push past my limits
  • Excited for a fresh start in this amazing sport
  • Eager to grow my speed and endurance
  • Looking forward to teamwork with my present and future team

  • It makes me smile that I discovered a sport that I can put my energy to that demands a lot of me and that I can see myself enjoying for a long time! My Uncle rowed at UW-Madison for four years and when I told him I wanted to row he was super excited! The first thing he said,

Not only have you shown the dedication, leadership, and physical strength, but you also have tremendous mental strength that will make you a great contributor to your team and rowing a wonderful fit for you.”

I am looking forward to my college search and to find the right fit academically and as a rower. Let's talk to learn more about your school and team. I will update with my progress. Thank you!
