Hello coaches! I am Amelia Katula, a well-rounded student athlete and young woman of many talents. I am a dedicated bisweptual rower, scholar, and teammate and I would like to row competitively in college while growing as a student and as a person. I am currently a junior in high school. I row for Wakefield High School and am a student in the HB Woodlawn Program, both in Arlington, Virginia.
Before focusing on rowing I trained intensively in mixed martial arts for several years. MMA taught me toughness, self-reliance, and that hard work lessens pain and leads to success. It was great preparation for rowing! One thing that sets crew apart from MMA is the importance of teamwork. What I love most about crew is working with my coaches and teammates to channel our individual efforts into success for the team.
My academic interests are wide ranging. I plan to major in one of the sciences, probably biology, but I also love art and have been recognized for artistic achievement. Regardless of the subject, I am mainly interested in challenging myself and growing intellectually. Studying classical piano for over 10 years has also helped to shape me as a student and an athlete. The lessons I have learned from devoting hours upon hours to Chopin are directly relevant to rowing and school. Mastering the minutest of movements, such as studying the rhythm of a song is much like matching my stroke to everyone else's. Getting it exactly right takes talent, but also requires an enormous amount of discipline and practice.
