My name is Sofi Burciaga and I play wing and striker. I go to the British International School of Chicago, have a GPA of 4.4 and graduate in 2023. I am a strong athlete, committed student and community advocate. I first started playing soccer in 5th grade after the middle school coach saw my skills and asked me to be a part of the team and have loved the game ever since. While there was a waitlist for the middle school varsity team, the coach invited me as a walk-on without a tryout. I’ve played soccer for the British School of Chicago since then, and play volleyball and basketball (of course when there isn’t a pandemic). In all my years of playing I have always been a starter, and for many years have been captain of the soccer and volleyball team for school. To improve my skills and become more experienced, I played on a coed Mexican league over the last three years which plays indoor and outdoor in the Midway Soccer League and 5 Star Soccer League. As a freshman, I was meant to start on the high school varsity soccer team for school before the world went into quarantine. In the spring of 2020, I was invited to join Chicago Fire Junior City club based solely on references by my coaches at the time. Since then, I’ve learnt to see game play in a new perspective as well as the importance of a strong, cooperative team.
Academically, I’ve been in a mix of AP, double and single honors courses since freshman year. I’m also a National Honors Society member and have been the manager of the school F1 in Schools team for the past four years. F1 in Schools is the largest STEM competition in the world. I have experience in student body government as a council member and ambassador.
Our family believes strongly in supporting our community, volunteering our time to serve and actively feeding the homeless. We cook hundreds of meals each Christmas and hand-deliver them in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Most recently, we supported a pop-up grocery store for Chicago South Side residents who found themselves with zero access to food following looting and burning.
My love for the game is endless, my goal is to play for a college whose team excellence matches with their world-leading academics.
