My name is Grace Spriggs. I am 5'5" and I am a GK. If there is anything that history has taught me, it's that it doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like-with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
People say I don't look like a GK-not tall enough. Other people say that I don't look like a runner-too muscular and strong. I am All-State in both.
I am the Discovery Player for Alabama FC 04 ECNL which means that I drive 6 hours each way for home games and fly to away games every weekend. That takes being on top of my grades. I keep a 4.40 GPA and am in top 15% of my class of 685. My ACT is a 27 before before I begin my Junior year. Alabama has never given the DP spot to a GK before; I am extremely proud of having earned that position. I have been on the Region 3 pool every year since 2017and was invited to the National ODP training in 2018.
Track and CC are my hobby sports. In 2018, I was ranked as the fastest freshman 2-miler in LA, MS, and Al with a time of 11:43. In 2019, I was All-Metro and All-State Cross Country.
From the moment I put on my gloves or I set up at the starting line, people's perceptions have gotten in the way of them seeing me for the player and athlete that I am. For years I have transformed all of that into fuel. It feeds me. I will always have more self-belief than people have doubt. I believe in myself, my team, and being a leader. If you have that, everything else will come, including winning.
These experiences have made me a mentally stronger player with more grit, self-discipline, accountability, and a competitive fire that will never go out.
A quote I like from an athlete I love:
"I had that doubt coming in to LSU, 'oh he's not big enough. He's not going to be fast enough.' But you know, everybody can measure things they see, but they can't measure your heart."
