I started playing soccer when I was 5 years old and I was coached by my dad. My dad continued to coach me for a decade in the years that followed and you think I would be the stereotypical coach’s daughter who could slack off. But my dad always held me to higher standards than that. Eventually signing me up for a club team in 3rd grade. Joining a club team was much different than a town team. After each game, my dad would tell me what I could improve on the ride home. I used to hate the fact that he did that, I felt like he was saying I wasn’t good enough. But as I got older I feel the roles have switched. My dad tells me I did a great job while I tell him what I could have worked on. Right from the beginning my dad has conditioned me into becoming the excellent and analytical soccer player I am today.
Before high school soccer I always just saw soccer as a game that I was decent at playing. When I started playing at the high school level though I realized it meant more than that to me. Showing up every day after school even if I had a bad day to see my teammates always put me in a good mood. The people that I otherwise might not know if I hadn’t done soccer. I realized that soccer isn’t just a game it’s a community that I’m thankful to be a part of.
