Hello, my name is Julia Mendel and I love soccer. Soccer has been an exciting part of my life since I was three years old. Soccer is my life’s oxygen; I don’t know where I’d be without it. Every time I step on the field, I have the same goals in my mind, to improve and to learn.
In High School, I have started in all my games. I played several positions on my High School team, but primarily played Wide Midfield (Right/Left) and Striker. I have learned a lot from my teammates in club and high school, about how to be a team player and the success of playing as a team. When you work effectively as a team, a soccer game can be like magic where everything falls into place, and the win is all the more satisfying.
Everything about soccer has always caught my interest, so when I learned I was old enough to become a Nashoba Valley Soccer Referee, I jumped at the opportunity. Refing has helped broaden my understanding of the rules of the game. It has also allowed me to share my knowledge of soccer to those I ref. I love refing U8 boys and girls, because I have the opportunity to slow things down and teach them the game of soccer. Their faces light up when they learn something new and I’m proud to have been able to help them.
My parents have taught me that I can achieve most all of my goals using hard work and determination which I strive to achieve in everything I do. I push myself athletically and academically because I know from my parents that I should make the most of the opportunities given me and never pass them up. I excel in History, Science, English and Latin, and was selected as one of 4 students from my school to attend the DECA seminar, which prepares “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in business, and finance.” I have also won an award in the Mathematics’ League.
To push myself academically, I have been taking honors classes and keeping on the honor roll each quarter. With all of the traveling and playing that I do, I have to maintain a very tight schedule from school, from practice, to games, and even to strength and conditioning classes. My schedule may be very tight, but soccer has inspired me to budget my time more effectively. My parents are always telling me “work before play” so I strive to get all my work done well so I can play soccer.
Outside of school, sports and work, I enjoy many other activities. I love hanging out with my friends, running and bike rides, and spending time with my family. I also love hiking, mini-golfing and going to the movies. I am a Senior Girl Scout currently working to earn my Gold Award working for a community environment project I started. I have participated in Girl Scouts since I was five, and plan on sticking with it for as long as I can. Some school clubs I am active in is the Academic Team, where we just went to nationals, and the Latin Club, which is a so much fun.
My primary goal for college is to be accepted into a good university where I can study chemistry/biology, while continuing to play competitive soccer. I then plan to move on to medical school.
Please consider me as a candidate for your school. Just know that I will always be striving to do my very best and be a positive role model to others. After all, opportunities are once in a life time, you need to make the most of it.
