For over five years, soccer has given me a rush that could be provided by nothing else. I couldn’t imagine giving that feeling up after high school.
I was introduced to the competitive game of soccer in sixth grade when there was only a boys’ team at John Hill School. I was one of the seven girls to play soccer, one of the three, 11 year-old girls to have the courage to go against 14 year-old boys in a game they were wired to win. This experience taught me to play aggressively and have no fear on the field.
The next year brought hardships, just not the same kind. Along with two other girls, I helped found John Hill School’s first-ever girls’ soccer team. Being captain and a role model to the rest of the team was challenging because it wasn’t only my responsibility to be a leader in morals and directions, but also in spirits. I had to assure my team that the work they put in would pay off. We were a new, young team, so wins weren’t our specialty. My eighth grade year became slightly easier because the team was filled with more hope.
My real love for soccer came along during pre-season before freshman year. That’s when I realized the effort I needed to give in order to gain the spot I wanted. By the first scrimmage, I knew my hard work paid off because I earned the right defensive starting varsity position. The feeling that I got stepping onto the field was one I knew I wouldn’t want to give up in four years when I graduated from Boonton High School.
This year has been my highlight year so far because I’ve grown as a player and a person. I’ve scored twice throughout the season and have had numerous assists and saves. I’ve gotten the experience to fill in for upperclassmen and see how I play in other areas of the field.
As for academics, I’ve proven to myself that I could be the student I’ve always wanted to be. Freshman year was an adjustment at first, but I held strong and was able to sustain a 4.0 GPA throughout the year. The same can be said for my sophomore year.
