My mother’s favorite saying, which I hear on a regular basis, is, “Your growth is in your challenges, not your successes.” I’ve taken this to heart. My challenge has always been using my voice, except in soccer. I’m a straight A student who likes to sit at the back of the room and quietly take in information. I like musical theatre, but prefer to be an extra, singing with the chorus, rather than the lead. And then there is soccer….
On the pitch, I’m vocal, I’m comfortable, I’m confident. My coaches love to move me around the field, sometimes playing mid, occasionally forward, but I am most comfortable when I can see the whole field and be a leader; here, I have a voice and a vision. I’ve won both athletic and academic awards at my school, Fort Worth Country Day, and my club teams have seen success, but through soccer, I have the opportunity to face my biggest challenges and find my biggest strengths. I can’t imagine my life without soccer.
Playing soccer in college is extremely important to me. As a female, I find my strength, my worth, my tribe, out on the pitch. The older I get, the more clear it is that soccer will always be a part of my life. I crave the competition and the camaraderie. Soccer is my challenge, my success, and my life.
