I remember my high school coach saying to my team, "if you are not mentally stable to play center back during the game, then I am going to take you out, let you breathe, and will only let you come back in once you show me you are absolutely ready play". I took that lesson to heart, especially as it was about the position I was going to be playing. I started off my high school season last year as an outside back, but eventually moved to center back once I proved to my coach that I could work well both mentally and athletically in that position. Although I love the position, I also realized the reason for my coach telling me and my teammates to be mentally tough while playing it. It is an important position that takes a great amount of focus and ability, as well as a strong mental game.
While playing soccer as well as playing center back, I have learned the importance of being a team leader, and being the one to uplift the team when it is down. I have learned ownership, sacrifice, and how mindset can change the entire game. I have learned teamwork and commitment, as well as movement and tactics. Overall, I have learned through ups and downs what it takes to be a respectable, mentally tough, responsible, uplifting, and positive team player. I have also taken the skills I’ve learned from soccer into everyday life, including in the classroom. I am looking for a program that will fit me well athletically and academically, and a program that I will be a great addition to as both a player and a student. As a newly elected team captain and a dedicated team player, I believe I have the leadership and teamwork skills, as well as the drive and focus, to be a great addition to your program.
