Walking straight into my grandparents swimming pool at the age of 3 sparked the passion I have for the pool. I began swim lessons shortly after and I have not stopped swimming since. Swimming is, and has been, the outlet that allows me the opportunity to both challenge and relax each day. When I’m in the water everything gets quiet and peaceful. Swim meets bring out the competitor in me. I am always pushing to finish ahead of my competition, giving my maximum effort, and talking to my coaches, seeking ways to improve my techniques and my times. My mother became disabled 5 years ago and seeing her illness take a toll on her and our entire family has been an adjustment. But, through this difficult family experience I have also grown stronger as an individual, student, athlete, team member, sister and daughter.
Also, during this time I was unable to swim on a high school team as my school did not have a team. So, I worked with an athletic director and a coach at another high school to get approval to swim for their team as a Freshman, however after the first swim meet I was informed they had given me incorrect information and that I would be unable to continue swimming for the team I had grown attached to. I began campaigning and working with my school administration and athletic director to begin a program without much support from our district office. During my Sophomore year I was told the school was starting a swim club, but the club was never developed. At the end of my Sophomore year I received the exciting news they would be starting a team for the beginning of my Junior year, however due to the lack of a certified coach and transportation to a practice site the team was abandoned. Through all of this I have never lost my love for swim nor did I let the doors being closed stop me from finding teams to be a part of. My love for the water flows over into my academic and professional goals as a future Marine Biologist. I am searching for a college program that facilitates my desire to grow both academically and athletically. I have a strong work-ethic, motivation, leadership skills and the talent to compete for a college team which I believe will allow me to make a significant positive impact both athletically and academically for your school program.
