Personal Statement

Hi my name is Jesslyn Joy Handaja and I am incredibly honored that you're reading this. Ever since I could remember I was surrounded by the water: the pool, the bathtub, or the beach. I showed very early interest in swimming and my parents decided to sign me up for it because it was the cheapest sport for me to join. Fast forward to now 16 years of age and swimming since I was about 7 years of age. Swimming has played a big role in my life including teaching me the meanings of teammates, sportsmanship, time management, and relationships. I feel like I would be a good asset to your team because I put my heart and soul into everything I do, I try my hardest to achieve my goals, and aspire to better myself and help the people around me. The dream of swimming in college kept me motivated and I now have 9 years of competitive swimming under my belt from swimming in a club (Covina Aquatics Association which has merged into La Mirada Armada) from about age 7 to present day to swimming for the varsity swim at Walnut High School. For club swim I have swam in the more advanced meets such as June Age Group Champs, Metro Champs, Winter Age Group Championships, Summer and Spring Junior Olympics. For high school varsity swim I have been to CIF every year since freshman year and swam the 200 IM, 100 Back, and 100 fly. I have maintained a 3.78 unweighted GPA (4.11 Weighted), balancing swim, volunteering, and honors and AP classes.
