Hi, my name is Rachel Wyland. I am a junior at Colonie Central high school, and one of the captains of my varsity swim team. I have been swimming competitively since age 9, and I have loved it ever since.
Swimming has taught me how to work hard and be motivated. It has helped me with time management, and perseverance. I learned how to be dedicated and a good team member. I am a leader in and out of the water, and genuinely care about and support every swimmer on my team.
While I have been a club swimmer for many years, I had no opportunity to swim Varsity because my school does not have a pool. I, along with several other swimmers from my school, helped form a merged team with a neighboring city school. They had the pool and a small group of swimmers, and together we were able to move from last place in our council to the middle of the pack, shattering school records with every meet. It has been the best thing I have been involved with in swimming and I am incredibly proud of my team and my involvement in accomplishing this. Unfortunately, due to COVID and budget cuts, both seasons have been postponed so I have not had the chance to compete. However, this has not stopped me from working hard outside of the water. I have been running several miles a day, doing dryland, core workouts and whatever I can to stay in shape and ready to compete as soon as we are allowed.
