I first learned to swim at the local YWCA. I can’t say that I loved the water from the beginning; Initially, I was afraid to put my head in the water. As time progressed, I fell in love with the sport of swimming. I have been competitively swimming since I was 7 years old. I spent 2 years competing on the town recreational team where I raced in my first meets and got a feel for the sport. At the end of my second short course season, I asked my parents to join a more competitive team. Before that summer, I joined my current club team, Empire. Throughout my 7 years on the team, I have learned how to train, race and deal with adversity. Now, I cannot imagine life without swimming.
The last three years, I swam for my varsity school team, which reinforced my desire to want to swim on a college team. I was able to meet new people and hear the perspectives of the upper classmen. We were able to achieve the 200 medley and 200 free relay record at the Ivy championships, our biggest league meet. I’ve had a great deal of success and fun with my club team, but there is no feeling like scoring points for my school team. I’m excited about the thought of having the opportunity to build relationships with my future teammates and contribute to the success of a collegiate team.
While swimming is a huge part of my life, I realize that I’m attending college to get a great education that will prepare me for the next chapter of my life. At this juncture, I would like to study engineering and then attend law school. Therefore, the best fit for me will be a college with high academic standards while also having a strong swim team.
