Personal Statement

I was a gymnast from the age of 4 to 15 years old and reached level 9 (out of 10). My practices were 4 1/2 hours per day, 4 days a week. Gymnastics taught me discipline, hard work, dedication, and to persevere, no matter what happens.

I ran for the Augusta Prep varsity team as an eighth grader, while still performing upper level gymnastics.   It was then that I realized my passion for Track & Field.  I loved the workouts and the exhilarating feeling of competing, as a team, towards a state championship.  In my Junior year we accomplished a school state championship for the first time.  Though I scored the most team points, the highlight for me was being on a motivated team of goal oriented, like minded athletes.

Despite being on multiple school record breaking teams (4x400 team, 4x100, distance medley), and breaking the school 200m record, it is the challenges of pole vaulting that I would like to tackle in college.  Discovering this new passion just over a year ago, I became the state champion with a height of 10ft, after only a year.

I have learned important time management skills from my years in the gym. I was class president my junior and upcoming senior year, was captain of the volleyball team, maintained a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school, and participated in multiple service and extracurricular activities.

I intend to study medicine.  However, I would love to continue my sporting activities as I sincerely believe that the lessons I learn on the field and track make me a better student, person, and friend.

Training

  • Gymnastics
  • 10 years
  • When I first started gymnastics as a seven year old, we had three hour practices, three times a week. We always had conditioning incorporated into our practices, even at a young age. As I moved up in the levels, practice hours increased. For the last three years of my gymnastics career, I was practicing four and a half hours a day, four days per week. One to one and a half hours of that time was dedicated to pure conditioning. We would start with a 30 minute conditioning warm up, and then have one hour to complete our conditioning list. Despite being extremely hard and tiring, my coach taught us to love conditioning and to embrace the pain, because that is what it takes to compete at the level we were competing.
  • Pole Vault/Track
  • 2 years
  • During the off season, my coach's two sons, my brother, and I work out five days a week. Mondays and Wednesdays consist of running training mixed in with burpees, push ups, and pull ups. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do whole body weight training, with Fridays being pole vault training days. On average, we do minimum 30 pull ups (sets of 10-12) and 60 push ups (sets of 10-15) per day. Even during volleyball season, there are workouts, but not necessarily as rigorous.
  • Volleyball training
  • 1 year
  • Volleyball practices are normally two hours per day, four to five days per week (depending on the number of games that week). I have had one year of training and this coming season will be my second year.

Additional Sports

  • Gymnastics
  • 10 years
  • Club/Travel Team
  • I have competed in gymnastics from the age of 7 to 15 years old, qualifying for state every year and having been state champion in vault several times. I achieved level nine (level ten being the highest level).
  • Volleyball
  • 2 years
  • Varsity Team
  • I am relatively new to the sport of volleyball, starting my junior year. I was the JV captain and the main setter. However, by the end of the season, I was bumped up to the Varsity Team, where we made it to the final four.
