I have never been given the option of quitting or giving up. Even as a small child with bobbing, blonde pigtails, I was told that there was fun only after the hard, physical work was finished. So at eight o’clock at night, while most other kids were in bed, I would be finally arriving home after another late night in the barn. The next morning I would beg to stay home that night and rest, but yet again I was told by both my mother and father, “there’s work to do.”
As I got older there were many occasions when many other people would like to give up. In the fall, I would have to help dig out wagons during a torrential downpour. In the winter, freezing my hands while drawing blood from the heifers outside in below zero temperatures was a normal thing. While in spring, grabbing newborn calves out of the mud before they drowned was another one of the many tasks that I’ve become accustomed to.
I believe that throughout my life, it has been engraved in me how important it is for me to physically push myself past my comfort and this has given me an advantage through my athletics. It has given me the perseverance and determination to push for the success of my team; my family. It has also given me the goal of playing at the next level and wanting to achieve something for more than myself. I have a natural desire, a need, to win with and for my team.
My upbringing has taught me the importance of motivation and I have carried that throughout athletics and academics. It taught me to apply myself and with this, I have taken AP Biology, AP Statistics, and a college level writing class. All of these I have passed with good marks and have gotten college credit for. Along with my class load, I have also applied myself into higher-level clubs. I have been involved in Global Scholars all throughout high school and from 2022 to 2024, I have been a member of the National Honor Society.
Pushing myself to be the best version of myself I can be is always at the forefront of my mind. I want to be there for my team and make a difference. I want to be the change maker. I want to compete. I want to be part of something bigger than myself; a value I have always cherished.
