My name is Sofia Castiglioni, and I am a junior at Berkeley High School in Berkeley, CA. On and off the court, I am viewed as a leader, independent, team-oriented, confident, and friendly. I strive to maintain optimal mental and physical health for myself and those around me. I have played club volleyball for 5 years. I played Varsity freshman year and look forward to earning a position this year. Sadly, we lost our High School Coach on April 23, 2021. As teammates we collected our inner strength and learned to navigate his passing together. This event was a reminder to make time for all things loved, such as family and friends.
Outside the classroom, community-based projects include necessity kits for people experiencing homelessness and holiday stockings for at-promise youth. Unfortunately, as we have had our share of wildfires, my family collected sizable amounts of Halloween Candy for Cal Fire. School club activities included restoring the community garden, making sandwiches for those experiencing homelessness, and trash cleanup. Hobbies include playing the viola, cello, guitar, and drawing. Although time is limited, I enjoy volunteering as a student tutor at school, and am currently employed as an assistant volleyball coach, teaching the fundamentals to young athletes.
My goal this summer is to practice with my high school volleyball team and earn an internship at Bay Area Community Services (BACS), a non-profit that envisions a world where people are healthy, safe, and engaged in community wellness. I am fortunate to have grown up in the Bay Area, a location known for its cultural and socio-economic diversity. The influence of my community has given me a real world lens and although there are several barriers preventing a healthy existence for all, the lack of housing has concerned me the most.
I would be thrilled to share more about how I can be an asset to your 2023 Program. If you are seeking a player with a growth mind set, I am your pick!
