My desire to play volleyball began in the fourth grade when I made my school volleyball team. I started playing club volleyball in the sixth grade where I was an outside hitter playing all the way around. I continued to play in this position throughout middle school and my freshman year of high school on junior varsity. In my sophomore year, I made the varsity team and became a starter as well. It was during this time that my varsity coach started transitioning me to the libero position. This year was also the first year I played libero for my club team, and I love it! I plan to continue playing this defensive position throughout the rest of my high school years. Defense and supporting all of my teammates are some of my strong suits when it comes to volleyball. I have no problem hitting the floor and pride myself on touching balls that seem nearly untouchable.
Volleyball has taught me so many things, including the value of sportsmanship, and has given me so many gifts. I have grown up throughout the years with many great teammates, parents, and coaches. It has taught me the discipline of a work ethic and the sacrifices of personal time. At the end of my sophomore school season, I was awarded the Coaches Award as an outstanding varsity team member. During his speech, my coach remarked, “Shelby is like a construction worker! Before each game, she puts on her hard hat and eagerly enters the court to do her job. Not only will she do anything for her team and teammates, but she puts them first, above all”. It was a great honor to receive this award and motivate me to continue pushing myself and putting all of my efforts into the sport I love playing.
My academics are extremely important to me. I ended my Spring 2021 semester with a 4.43 GPA. I currently have a 4.19 cumulative GPA and am ranked 4 out of 695 students. I plan on studying law or criminal justice in college.
