I first became interested in volleyball when a family friend soon to be coach built a grass court in 6th grade, from 6th-9th grade I only played on grass because my schools could afford a gym. My first year of high school my school didn't have a team we were only a club. I became dedicated to making it to varsity playoffs. Our first year we struggled, not even able to get 10 points off of half the teams in our division, but the more we lost, the more I wanted to lead my team to success. We spent relentless hours training each summer on grass and sand courts, and we came to realize that in order to win we not only had to put in the hour, we had to play for each other, not just ourselves and this year, my senior year we made it to playoffs.
We made a deal with a local gym that if we bought them a new $10,000 scoreboard we could use the gym for basketball and volleyball practice. I have never been a part of a more determined group of people, kids who just wanted to work hard and become great. Since then I play there at open gym every Wednesday night on a mens net and it is the best part of my week. I love how one sport can bring together people of all ages gender ethnicity and language and no matter our differences we all speak the language of volleyball.
I have played a varsity sport each season of the year for the past three and a half years while maintaining a 4.0, I know what it takes to be a successful focused athlete on the court and in the classroom, it requires sacrifice, time management putting the team above oneself and dedication to constantly be in a state of learning and growth.
