Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Deanna Garcia. Now, I know right when you see my height you may think that I'm already to short to be a volleyball player. I get that a lot. Once people see how small I am, they automatically think that I'm not very good or that I'm too weak. Once I get on the court especially as a starter, I'm a whole different person. I'm in game mode all day throughout the entire match. Volleyball is literally my life. It never gets boring and for some reason, I can play it literally all day long. My dream is to play volleyball in college day and night I'd never get tired of playing it. Of course I want to become successful as well, but I don't want to become successful without volleyball taking part in my life. When I first began to play volleyball, I was a shrimp compared to everyone else. My goal was to be just as good as them no matter what my height was. Due to my scoliosis, I do have a disadvantage with my height, but that never mattered to me. I knew and still know that I can be the best that I can be. Honestly, I was having second thoughts about even putting anything about me playing volleyball in high school, but I need to face my fears. Once I set a goal I WILL stick to it until I finally reach it, especially if it has to do with volleyball. I never played the way I do now. I never thought I'd be the volleyball player I am today. I never thought I'd ever be a starter for volleyball in my entire life because of my height. During my freshman year, all of the good players were starters and it was upsetting to me because I really wanted to be a starter. I got invited to play for a club team in Fountain and set a goal to become a starter on at least the Junior Varsity team. After cub season, I had finally reached my goal! I was a starting outside hitter and like the past year, I was the shortest on the team. My next goal was to block because my coaches/friends never thought I'd be able to. I had been increasing my vertical at home to prove that I, a short person, could be able to block too. I eventually reached my goal this year and can finally block! No matter how big they are. I have many more aspirations in life dealing with volleyball. I personally am debating about trying to be a libero because I'm small and pretty fast. I can pass well enough to be a libero too. My main dream is to just play volleyball in college and hopefully for the rest of my life and become successful with whatever I do. Thank you for having the time to read this, I truly do appreciate it no matter what your choice is. -Deanna Garcia
