Hello—My name is Sophia Spiotti. Thank you for visiting my profile! A little bit about myself: I am a senior at Watertown High School in Watertown CT & I first started playing volleyball during freshmen year for my high school. Since then, I have completely fallen in love with the sport and developed a strong passion for playing, which was furthered by my participation in my first ever club season the following winter for the YMCA Northwest Juniors in Torrington CT. There, I began to fall into the role of a hitter. The subsequent high school season being my sophomore year, I earned a starting & full rotation position as a hitter for my school team. Since then, though with Covid being a setback for playing through the winter season, I have devoted lots of my time and efforts to playing volleyball and can say without a doubt that it is my favorite way to spend time. I have a forward mindset, as I am always pushing to become a stronger player and an asset to my teams. Blending more with my teammates has also been a large part of my goals—using my knowledge of the sport to help & lead others on the court is the role I have naturally fallen into as a captain for the 2021 fall season.
While many of my accomplishments on the court are seen either mentally or through my stats, an example of a recognition which I have been awarded is the nomination to my league’s “All—Iron” divisional team for the fall 2020 season, after leading my team in kills as well as providing very consistent and solid stats all around as a passer alongside my hitting in-game.
I would call myself a strong player on the court, though I also would not diminish my dedication to my academic efforts which have been consistently positive for my entire academic career. Maintaining my weighted GPA of 4.5 as an honors student (with relevant AP classes) is a large focus of mine as a student-athlete, as I place lots of importance to my academic success while looking into college and my life after college. I have mainly focused on becoming an orthodontist and studied around this, but I also see myself getting into volleyball coaching when I am out of high school, and continuing to play wherever I am needed.
Also worth mentioning is my competitive tennis career under my high school’s team. Though the pandemic caused the cancellation of 2020 spring sports (my sophomore year), I still was very eager to get to a court with anyone I could find willing to play in order to prepare for the 2021 season. I spent much of quarantine practicing at my local courts in order to earn the 3rd singles varsity spot my junior year. Due to having much more limited access to coaching as compared to volleyball, I developed my tennis skills using resources such as Youtube videos and articles which explained techniques which I put into practice on my own time in order to learn. Development with the team was a struggle because a group of some forty girls was sharing four courts! Thankfully, my own competitive hunger drove me to rank highly within our team, and in this past season we claimed the Naugatuck Valley League championship title. I remained the strongest 3rd singles player in the NVL, losing only once to an opponent in an off match who I later overcame in the league tournament with a score of 8-2. I can say that I am very proud of my record, having put in lots of focus and effort in order to claim a victory for my team at every match.
In both the athletic and academic sections of my life, I pride myself with being, determined, fierce, and consistent. It is my intention to always strive for excellence and to reach it alongside my teammates, and to always be confident in my skills and my mind.
Thank you for your prolonged interest in my profile. I hope that this statement has allowed you to understand who I am—as a person and as player.
