Hi, my name is Jaylin Burston. I am an early graduate of Overlea High School and Sollers Point Technical High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and a dual enrollment student at Community College of Baltimore County. I am the youngest of six older brothers and one older sister. As I often like to say, my youngest-oldest sibling is my 20-year-old stepbrother. I previously enjoyed various activities, including dancing, swimming, painting, cheering, playing softball, and playing the piano. My current activities include cooking, singing, acting, writing music, community service, and playing sports such as basketball, volleyball, and track & field. These activities showcase my interpersonal and soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, organization, flexibility, dependability, problem-solving, and leadership. These activities support my personality traits, such as being adventurous, versatile, creative, determined, resilient, persistent, optimistic, generous, logical, understanding, and confident.
I have a strong academic background, starting at 3-years-old and consistently maintaining all A’s. I may have had a B once, but definitely not more than twice. I have also maintained a GPA of 5.28 since ninth grade. This achievement is significant as it represents my 12+ years of academic excellence throughout my schooling. My transition from private Christian school to public high school in Baltimore, Maryland, was initially a scary struggle, but through the challenges, I have still been able to excel in honors classes, GT classes, and dual-enrollment college courses. I am grateful for the resources provided by Overlea and BCPS, which have helped me develop confidence in my abilities and stand up for what I plan to accomplish in the future. Throughout my time in high school, I have learned that sometimes people may not notice you, but it's important to make sure then when you do make yourself noticed it is in the right reasons. My mother continues to remind me to "hype" myself up so that I can demonstrate my passion and logic about my decisions, accomplishments, and future plans.
In high school, I joined various clubs and hobbies to pursue my passion for helping others and the community. As a young African American female, I aim to change our culture's narrative and ensure everyone receives adequate resources to become the best version of themselves. My college experience will help me gain knowledge and resources to serve and impact my community by giving them a voice, networking, and creating organizations. My ultimate goal is to foster change in my community and globally, in a way that will reach future generations. To achieve this, I plan to major in biology, possibly double majoring in public health/public policy, and minor in chemistry and English or Spanish. After completing my bachelor's, I hope to attend medical school to become a general practitioner, anesthesiologist, general surgeon, or dermatologic surgeon
