Hi Volleyball fans!
My name is Calista Kalishek (I like Cali best). I am striving to be the best Libero for the graduating class of 2023.
My love for competition began at an early age with gymnastics on a Trampoline and Tumbling Team. I am a natural athlete and developed quickly; winning local meets and Regional Titles in 2013-2016 and went on to compete nationally. Then I tried playing volleyball for fun and I instantly knew that this was my sport. The super-fast reflexes and body control required for trampoline and double-mini translated directly onto the volleyball court for me. This training also helped me to read the opposing player’s attacks. I like the team aspect of volleyball and how the sport also allows me to shine as an individual.
I am a starting Senior Libero, 2-time All-CCAL 1st team, 1-time 2nd team, 3-time county dig leader at South Carroll High School, Class of 2023. I currently play for Columbia Volleyball Academy (CVA) on their 17’s National Red team. This in my 5th season of club volleyball, participating in both the Open and National Level brackets. I thank my coaches and teammates for their training and support. All the while staying focused and maintaining a 4.2 weighted and 3.8 unweighted GPA.
The pandemic continues to make things challenging, but I have kept myself involved in volleyball. I focused my attention this year on mental and personal improvement. I traveled to A5 volleyball in GA for a Libero camp, Volleyball Skills Camp with Kendall White, High intensity camps locally and weekly private training session with the head coach at Columbia Volleyball Academy. I try to take advantage of every opportunity to get more touches on the ball. I work extensively outside of practice to further develop my skills, so I can excel at the sport I truly love. I do not make excuses when I make a mistake and I don’t dwell on it. I quickly assess the error and focus on making the next play better. All my coaches have remarked on how well I receive and implement instruction and are impressed by how I can immediately apply feedback.
I enjoy a high level of competition and I constantly work to better my skills and versatility. I use my leadership skills to help my team play cohesively. Intense weekly practices and conditioning help me prepare for our local and regional tournaments where we often finish in the Gold bracket. I am confident of my skills on the court, and I don’t consider any ball out of my reach.
I know it takes more than hard work, dedication, and passion to be successful at the college level. The best players are well rounded and encompass more than just the love for volleyball. Academics are equally important. I am looking for the best balance between academic excellence and competitive volleyball available. I am currently in Honors and AP classes while maintaining a high GPA (4.2 weighted and 3.8 unweighted). In college I am planning on studying in the field of biological sciences. Outside of volleyball and studying, I like to express myself through art, spend time with family, my cats and friends and maintain my trampoline skills. I also participate in volunteer work. Maryland high schools require 75 hours of community service for graduation. I have surpassed that goal with 101 hours to date.
I GENUINELY LOVE VOLLEYBALL!!! Every day I prepare myself mentally for the game. I have a “can-do” attitude and follow good habits to make myself the best athlete possible. I am relentless on the court, and I know I will be a great asset to your program.
