I have played almost every sport out there, but volleyball has been the one that I have chosen to pursue in college. I was a very competitive swimmer up until I was 13, qualifying for states each year, and doing very well every time. I worked hard at swimming and was successful in the sport, but my love for volleyball quickly caught up to that of swimming. I learned to appreciate the way that teamwork played a role in volleyball. In swimming, it was more about personal success, but this was not the case in volleyball. I believe that I am a very unique teammate because I can balance my personal goals with those of the team. I have flourished as a leader in the eyes of my teammates and my coaches. I have been to several leadership conferences, one of which was in Dublin, Ireland. I have been able to use the skills that I have learned on and off the court. In addition, I have a very competitive edge and I often use other's success to help motivate myself to improve. I always push myself to my highest potential and lead by example, encouraging my teammates to do the same.
Academically, I push myself too. I have been on Scholarship Roll each quarter of high school and have maintained a 4.0 GPA. I have learned how to balance academics, athletics, service and extracurriculars. Because of this, I have been accepted into National Honor Society. I intend to major in a health related field which I know takes an immense amount of work, but balancing this with volleyball is not a concern of mine. I know that my focus on school and volleyball will be distributed appropriately.
I have been told that I am a very coachable athlete. I value what my coaches have to say, and I try to apply these things to my playing as quickly as possible. I also value my personal character. I received an award called the Christian Witness Award which is given to one student who expresses good character towards her peers and teachers. I am respectful to my coaches, teammates, and teachers, in addition to being responsible with my schoolwork. I have four siblings, so I have learned to mix with many different types of personalities. Strong character is important to me on and off the court.
As an student-athlete, I have created goals for myself. I am working to increase my vertical by improving my leg strength and jumping abilities. Academically, I am going to work to improve my SAT scores by doing more practice online and with a tutor. I know I am a good candidate for a college team because of my dedication and passion for the sport, devotion to my academics, strong leadership skills, and good character.
