Personal Statement

I was introduced to the game of Volleyball in primary school (grade 6) where I learned to love the complexity and form of the game. As I transitioned to middle school and began my club career I truly fell in the love with the game specifically how it promotes a combination of skill, individual drive, team chemistry, and strong psychological strength.

Inherent in my personality is the drive to succeed, stay focused on the goal, work to improve myself, and at the same time my team (I know it sounds cliché but very true for me). Although I’m still only in middle school I have quickly realized to meet my goals and those of the team I must: train like you play: play like you train.

Although counter to how people view volleyball players – the taller the better, I believe I’ve been blessed with my size; I’m currently 5’5” and have an approach jump of 8’9”, and speed (I was also a member of the Track & Field team).  My size and athletic ability provided me the opportunity to be selected defensive specialist & libero for my club the past two years.   When I get the chance, I love to play left side where I have the chance to demonstrate my vertical/approach allowing me to support the team with scoring.  Both seasons I’ve spent with my club I’ve been selected team Captain & MVP.

I was selected to attend two consecutive sessions with Volleyball Canada’s Center of Excellence (http://www.vcce.ca/), which has been both a personal & sport specific achievement.  With VCCE I have the chance to work with world-class coaching to refine my technical skills, work to reach my full potential, and continue to develop my leadership skills.  I’ll be joining the group again in the fall of 2016.

I count myself VERY lucky to have the chance to work 1:1 weekly with one of Canada’s National libero.  This opportunity provides me insights into the top level of the sport, which I continue to integrate into my skill set including the VERY important psychological aspect of the game.  The time and insight spent in this 1:1 environment has allow me to take my game play to the next level advancing all aspects of my game.  I count myself as very fortunate in having this opportunity to train with such a highly respected national team member.

I was also recognized as an exceptional student athlete and award an athletic scholarship from Omega Health & Fitness (http://www.omegahealthandfitness.com/).  The program has provided me with coach (strength & conditioning) that is top in their field having served numerous times in Olympics programs and with several top professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, and MLS.  I have worked with the Omega family for the last 2 years and continue to work with my coach on a weekly base.

No matter where I am in life, I give 110% at everything I do. I am an Honors student that has won numerous academic awards and has a drive to be academically challenged.  Much like the game of volleyball I apply the same approach to school and all aspects of life.

Train like you Play: Play like you Train.
