Personal Statement
My name is Jessica Nicole Martinez. I am currently a senior at Edinburg North High School, and will graduate in June 2012. I am only 5'7", but that will not stop me from pursuing my dreams as a college volleyball player.
My 7th grade year, I made the A team, but my 8th grade year, I was placed on the B team. At first, I wasn't happy with my placement, but continued to do my best anyway. I wanted to become a better athlete, so I became a part of the RGV Juniors 14's club team. Playing for RGV Juniors was a life changing experience for me. I learned volleyball in a whole new way. I quickly adapted to a quicker style of play, and became hungry to learn more and more.
I worked harder and harder, and by my 9th grade year, I was a varsity athlete. I had been told several times that I wasn't good enough, but instead of letting that affect me, I turned those words into motivation to better myself. I played for the RGV Juniors 16's team my freshman year, and ran varsity track as well.
After my junior year, I started to train with Jaime Cavazos at Cavazos Sports Institute (CSI). Training with Jaime was one of the most beneficial attributes to my athletic career. I became faster, stronger, mentally tougher, and my standing vertical boomed to a 29". Attaining this vertical did not come easy, and I continuously tell my self that I will get it as high as I possibly can.
Now my senior season, I have realized that I have matured drastically. I try my best to be a leader for my team. I try to keep a humble attitude, and when success is present, we thank the Lord for our given opportunities. I am nearing the end of my high school career, and will hopefully continue on to become a college athlete. I'd like to go school in Texas so my family may have an opportunity to see me play. In college, I'd like to major in Kinesiology and become a coach or a physical therapist.
I hope that my drive to do my best will be an impact on any team that I'd be blessed to play for, and hope that we become a family, on and off the court.
