Aloha my name is Mikah Keali’iokamoana Labuanan. I am a 18-year-old senior at Kamehameha High School Maui, which is a Hawaiian private school. I have been wrestling since I was 4 years old and wrestle all year round. I have been traveling to the mainland since I was 8 competing in a variety of different tournaments whether that's in Folkystle, Freestyle, or Greco-Roman. I lift weights and practice every day in my garage with my Dad, friends, and coach. Whether that’s in the mornings, after school, before wrestling practice, or after we always make sure to put that work in. In the mornings and nights, I like to do yoga, meditation, and journaling. I believe strengthening and checking up on our minds is just as important as strengthening our bodies. I believe at the next level the biggest difference is the mental side.
Without wrestling I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Wrestling has instilled values that I will use for the rest of my life. It has taught me how to respect others, hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and mental fortitude. Wrestling brings me so much joy. I love the feeling of always learning, improving and having to push through adversities. Putting myself in tough situations makes me feel most alive. The position where I know it’s not easy but it is 100% necessary to be the best is where I find my true self.
When I am not on the wrestling mat or in the weight room I am either on the soccer field or in the ocean. I started playing soccer at 3 years old. I have recently stopped playing soccer to fully focus on wrestling. Although I have stopped playing, soccer was one of the biggest parts of my identity. I was a part of Team Hawaiʻi national team and the Olympic Development Program. I have traveled all over the United States to play. In the ocean, I am a bodyboarder. I am a team rider and am sponsored by 5 different companies. Science Bodyboards, Gyroll, Viper Surfing Fins, and The Foam Company. I compete in local contests here in Hawai’i. It is a great stress reliever and brings me much joy.
