My name is William Meeker Jr. but I prefer to be called Liam. I am a 5’ 8” 165 lb student athlete in my senior year at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, MA. I have been a wrestler since I was 4 years old. I guess you can say it runs in the family. My dad, William Meeker Sr. was a youth, high school, and college wrestler, and he founded and coaches The Falcon Youth Wrestling Program in Wilbraham, MA. This program has greatly improved the town’s high school team over all. My mom, Heidi Meeker, was a college wrestler who competed and placed in the first Collegiate Women's National Championship in 2001.
I am an Honors Student with a 3.9 GPA. This GPA is a bit lower than my usual > 4.0 GPA as I admittedly had a bit of a hard time keeping up in Honors Spanish last year after spending the previous year in remote learning. Being that I am half hispanic, I am in a little bit of trouble with my mom, as you might imagine. I will be working to improve my GPA this year. I used to play the trumpet for our school band before the pandemic and I played Football in the fall as well.
Quick Wrestling Facts: 65-20 overall and 33-12 last year
2021-22: 7th D2 State, 4th D2 West Sectionals, 2nd Bears Invitational, 5-2@ Lowell Holiday, 2nd @ Chelmsford Invitational.
I know that I still have a lot of growing up and learning to do in life and in wrestling. I am hard-working on and off of the mat. Wrestling has taught me that win or lose there is always a lesson to be learned. The hardest thing about wrestling is finding the will to get back on the mat even when you are having the worst day. In those moments is where character is built. Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult. I am proud to say that I, my team, and our coaches found a way to keep our love for wrestling through it all. We had spring rather than winter seasons. We wrestled with masks. We tested and stayed conscientious to avoid getting ourselves or others sick. Pulling through as an individual and a team is what wrestling is all about and I am proud of the work we accomplished. In 2020-2021 our team was the dual meet championship semi finalist and in 2021-2022 our team placed 2nd in D2 state and 2nd All state.
I have enjoyed volunteering at the Falcon Friends Club in my high school which has given me the opportunity to engage with peers with severe disabilities, including playing games and eating lunch together, to foster relationships and sense of belonging. I have also volunteered as assistant coach for the Wilbraham Youth Wrestling Club for children from kindergarten - 8th grade
My major is undecided as I have a lot of areas of interest but I do know that I will always give it my all in class as well as in practice and competitions. I would be an excellent academic and athletic prospect for any college.
