Personal Statement

My goal in wrestling is simple: "I just want to wrestle." While many athletes try their best to reach higher competition, for me, it's about the love of the sport itself. I know coaches often seek competitors driven by winning, but I believe true drive is measured by passion for the goal, as I hope that I may continue to wrestle until I go into my next life, not complexity. My hunger to wrestle is just as strong, if not stronger, because it's a part of who I am. It pushes me to win my matches not to win, but just be able to continue wrestling throughout a tournament to the next.

This was my first and only wrestling camp I have ever gone to, yet it gave me a large amount of knowledge. It showed me a small glimpse of the lifestyle of a college student athlete, while also giving me tips and tricks on how to better myself as a wrestler.

"I’ve been wrestling for three years, starting in the second semester of my freshman year after switching from football. By sophomore year, I made Varsity and placed 4th at districts. In my junior year, everything clicked—I placed 2nd at districts, 1st at regionals, and finished in the top 8 at the 5A Texas state tournament."

Freestyle was a wild experience. In my first year, I accidentally signed up to wrestle seniors and held my own, even scoring points against a state placer named Jukes. But he beat me, slamming me on my head, and I got my first concussion, ending my freshman season. Going into my sophomore year, I was most excited for freestyle and Greco. I trained at multiple clubs and picked up new techniques that helped me in junior year folkstyle. That year, I placed at every freestyle and Greco tournament I entered, except for state. In my junior year, I didn’t compete as much. I focused more on improving my technique at my main club, aiming to come back stronger for my senior year.
