As most first generation college students, I have been faced with many challenges in my life. Despite these challenges, I have maintained my grades, excelled in multiple sports, and taken on many responsibilities at home. I am one of 5 children in my home and the only boy of my siblings, which has given me a unique opportunity to learn how to lead from a young age. School has not always come easy for me as I have struggled with dyslexia my entire life, but was only identified with this disability in the fourth grade. I believe that although dyslexia has made many things very challenging for me, I have established myself in my community and my school as a leader and a competitor. I am someone my coaches and teammates can count on to take care of what I need to in school and on every team I have been a part of. Through the many challenges I have faced in my life, there has not been a time when I have let my teachers, coaches, or teammates down. I know that should I have the opportunity to compete at the college level, I will continue to face whatever challenges head on. It is my goal to study criminal justice and enter the field of law enforcement after I graduate. As a native of South Texas, I have hopes of helping my community in the future as a Border Patrol Officer and I know that earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice will help me be most effective and open more opportunities for me in the future.
