Personal Statement

My name is Malcolm Barreiro, I am 6'5'' and weigh 205 pounds. I have been playing baseball all my life, and I truly love nothing more than to compete on the diamond. Since I went through my growth spurt around eighth grade, coaches of school, travel, and college teams and professional players have been telling me that my future will be on the mound. Initially, I had my reservations. I couldn't always muscle my fastball past a hitter, so I concentrated on location and hitting my spots. By my tenth grade year I took what coaches had been telling me fully to heart, and I began gearing myself towards becoming a dominant pitcher. I have put on roughly 15 pounds of muscle after one year in the weightroom, but more importantly, I have developed a feel for throwing the baseball that I believe places me in the elite among high school pitchers. I have always been a strong bat in the lineup, right side dominant, and am developing as a switch hitter. When not on the mound, I have literally played all positions. I am at home on first base. In tenth grade, at over 6 ft., my coach asked me to start in center field. Despite little history in the outfield, I embraced the opportunity and now count center as one of my most effective positions. I believe that after playing so many different positions, I have become a much more aware player. For instance, my experience as a catcher has made me a significantly better base runner. My reads are better, and my jumps are quicker. In 2011 I lead my school team in stolen bases. I am extremely motivated to play baseball in college. I have taken a heavy IB course load in my junior year. I do not want any College or University to ever be able to look at me and say that I did not completely challenge myself on the field or in the classroom. Realistically, I have had current professional baseball players and college coaches tell me that I would be able to compete at a Division 1 level. However, I am more than aware that there is excellent baseball to be played in all divisions of the NCAA. I am really looking for a forum where I can continue to grow under experienced coaches while playing at a high level of competitive baseball. Regarding school size, I am naturally leaning towards a smaller school. I am the type of student that is constantly in communication with my teachers, and I do not want that level of intimacy to be lost on a large campus. However, I do look forward to going on many more college visits, so this preference may change. Geographically, I am interested in playing on the east coast, because I am from upstate New York, and I know how important it is to be within a short car or plane ride from your family at any given time. But if the right opportunity presented itself, I would chose the path that sported the best coaches and most competitive baseball, regardless of the location. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read my personal statement, and good luck in the upcoming baseball season.
