My peers say cheerleading is their passion, but cheerleading is so much more than that to me—it's a lifestyle. As a student-athlete, cheerleading has an impact on and off the court. For me, cheerleading and education are connected. As a student-athlete, I strive to excel on the field and in the classroom. Cheerleading pushes me physically and mentally. It has taught me to accept criticism and has made me the leader I am today. Striving to meet my educational goals also pushes me, requiring me to stay active and rest to achieve balance in my daily life.
From a very young age, I was a gymnast. At six, I began Pop Warner Cheer. I began cheering for my junior high school at age 11. At 13, I also joined a competitive cheer team. Now, as a member of the Varsity team in my junior year of high school, I look forward to what lies ahead, both academically and athletically.
Without my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My mom instilled in me the importance of education and doing whatever it takes to reach my goals. My father first signed me up to cheer at age six and he attends every game. My little sister is also my biggest fan. Our extended family and friends, through school, cheerleading, and our church, support my efforts and are always available to encourage and support me in everything that I do. I am truly blessed.
As I begin my junior year, my goals for high school include competing again on the UIL cheer team, keeping up my GPA as I complete a challenging course load that includes medical science courses, and continuing as a member of the National Honor Society.
Cheerleading has helped me discover and develop my abilities. Along with the physical skill it takes to jump, stunt, and tumble, being a cheerleader has taught me practical life skills such as discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and dedication. It has given me the confidence to perform for a crowd and to lead others. I have always been told I was a leader, but I didn’t recognize it. Cheerleading has helped me to be successful in everything that I do and I enjoy every second!
