My favorite sport to play is field hockey. It all started when I decided I was going to play field hockey in the 8th grade. I never knew there was such a sport previously. I started my field hockey journey as a defender. I loved being part of this sport. It was so challenging both physically and mentally. I decided I wanted to continue this sport in high school so tried out for the team. High school tryouts were very difficult and tiresome, but also eye opening. I realized how much I loved this sport even through these grueling drills. I was learning so much. I will never forget when my coach asked me if I would be interested in being the goalkeeper. I said yes of course though I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I thrive on being challenged. At first being the goalie was so different and really hard, but I was eager to learn. I missed so many goals at the beginning which was so frustrating. I had to really calm myself and knew mistakes would happen, but I was learning from each of them. Towards the end of my freshman season the varsity coach pulled me up to join the team. I was super excited and determined to continue to be the best player and teammate I could be. I joined a club team and participated in many camps once the season ended. I wanted to train hard year-round because there is an unlimited amount of skills to learn. I searched for a goalie camp and found one in Pennsylvania that I attended for a week. I came back into my sophomore season so much more confident and seasoned than the year before. I was ready to take on the season.
I thank my coach often for asking me to be goalie because I wouldn’t be in love with this sport as much as I am now if it wasn’t for her. I train every day to get better because I want to be the best version I can be. Other than my coach, my teammates and my parents have influenced me through this journey. My parents are my greatest cheerleaders, but also my toughest critics. They encourage me to try my best and practice with me in our yard at home. I want to continue my field hockey journey in college because I love the game and I don’t want to stop when high school ends. I want to continue to get better and better, stop as many goals as physically possible and play. I will never give up and will always keep pushing myself to the limits. Other than field hockey, in college I want to study criminal justice and work hard on and off the field.
