Culture has always been a big part of playing football for the Watauga Pioneers. WTW, GPE, and TBM are the acronyms we use to describe our program. Work to win, give perfect effort, and team before me. These acronyms laid the foundation for our culture and each year we have built on it. The culture is what led our program to be so successful the past few years. During my sophomore year of high school football, I started both ways on a team that went 13-2, reaching the regional finals. We had less than 30 people on our varsity roster, but the culture we had and the relationships that we built with our teammates allowed us to beat teams that were more talented and had twice as many players as we did.
Now, in my junior season, our team has been through a lot of adversity. We lost a lot of our players, with only four starting people on offense and defense returning. With such a young team, with little to no varsity experience, most said we would be terrible and come 4th in a conference that we had dominated the past two years. Those naysayers only made our team want it more. With the culture that we have, and the relationships built with our teammates, we went undefeated in our conference.
Our culture has not only helped me be successful on the football field, but in the classroom as well. I strive every day to work to win, to give perfect effort, and to put my team before myself, not just when its convenient for me, but all the time. As a three-sport athlete, I have the work ethic, the leadership skills, and character to make an immediate impact on your team!
