Hello my name is Ryan Sellers, I’m a student athlete at Orange High School in Hillsborough, North Carolina. My dream is to play college ball, either college football or basketball. The reason I am pursuing this is because it's something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was little.
I started playing basketball when I was about 5 or 6 years old and didn't start playing football until I was nine years old. However, football has always been my first love. I began playing little league football during my second grade year, when I joined the recreational little league football team. I played little football until I was old enough to play middle school football for the Stanford Middle School "Chargers", on the JV team until I was able to move up to the varsity team.
I started playing football when I was nine years old. I was a tall and chubby kid that was limited to a couple positions, the offensive and defensive line. I hit my growth spurt during my middle school years and thinned out which made me a lot more versatile as a player. I first started out playing tight end and my last year playing recreational football in the 6th grade, I played running back because of injuries to my teammates. That season, I was voted most valuable player of my team. Going into the seventh grade I didn't know what position I would be playing and I can thank my middle school coach for putting me at defensive end.
That season as a seventh grader I impressed my coaches and played a lot of time with the eighth graders playing defensive end and tight end on the Varsity team and our team was undefeated both my seventh and eighth grade years in football. During my ninth grade year I not only played defensive end but also wide receiver on the JV team.. My sophomore year is the year that I got to play Varsity, ultimately starting at defensive end and at the end of the season receiving an all conference honorable mention.
Academically I have always had good grades. My parents taught me at an young age that grades are more important than sports and without the right grades I wouldn’t be able to play sports. I have made the honor role ever since my middle school years continuing through to my high school years. I have had couple C’s in my honors classes and even though my parents are not forcing me to take honors courses I take them to challenge myself and to strive to as well as I possibly can. One of things I need to decide on is my major and I have looked at various things that have interested me and I think I will eventually make a decision as I take classes this year. I have taken various classes, such as Journalism and Honors Computer Engineering to see what interests I may have in these areas.
In my town very few athletes get noticed to play college sports, leaving a lot of kids my age doubting why they’re playing high school sports when their chances of getting an athletic scholarship are slim. I want to be apart of the select few to be blessed to have to opportunity to play a college sport and prove them wrong.
