One of the events that has shaped me into the person I am today is my climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, one of the seven summits, at the age of 11. I learned many life lessons that are apparent in my life on and off the court. For basketball, it all started at a young age. My parents introduced me to the great game from the earliest of my memories and I haven’t looked back since. I knew I loved the game when I competed in my first game in a local league. Basketball was the perfect stage for my natural competitiveness and fire. Through basketball and Mt. Kilimanjaro, I’ve learned that I truly have no limits and I am the only one capable of slowing myself down.
As for my academic goals, I aspire to be just as good in the classroom as on the court. Straight A’s and valedictorian of my class were some of my highest goals entering high school. I currently am a close third in my class rank and have one B on record to this point. My collegiate academic goals are just as high. I understand the importance of the college education and basketball is my path to it. I will pursue a degree in either Sports Medicine or Statistics. But along my journey, I’ve run into many obstacles just like any other athlete or every day citizen. My climb on Mt. Kilimanjaro taught me that it isn’t about the size of the obstacles you run into, but the way you respond to the adversity. The experiences I’ve had and the things I’ve done have shaped me into the person I am today. As a result, I have become an exceptionally hard worker, learned perseverance, and become a leader. One of my favorite aspects of sports, particularly basketball, is the off season grind. I love the process of bettering all aspects of my game and practically live in the gym. I don’t slow down when running into an obstacle, but find a way around it and work tenaciously until I reach my goal. Lastly, I’ve learned to become a leader. I was also the varsity quarterback for two years and enhanced my leadership skills and control of the game.
