Sam Rex, Class of 2019 / 2021-22 Redshirt Freshman:
I was awarded a combination Athletic/Academic Scholarship to Notre Dame de Namur University (DII) out of high school. I was the only Freshman on the team and Redshirted my 1st year; and then, the Covid-19 Pandemic hit the world. Notre Dame terminated their Sports Programs. During the Pandemic off-year, I played a low number of games for Cypress Junior College, and am now looking for a new 4-year college home for basketball and academics.
I played in an advanced Men's League this summer (2021) and led all divisions in scoring with 32.9 PPG. I have included a highlight film of the games on my NCSA Profile site.
I have spent 12 years getting better at the game I love, and will spend the next 10+ years continuing on that pathway. My performance cannot be measured in the normal way, such as athleticism, height, weight, etc. I have performed well against and with some of the best players in the country. I don’t just play the game, I study the game, so my ability to use a high basketball IQ on the court is a learned skill that I continue to refine.
I have led most teams that I have played on in offensive and defensive categories, or at least been in the top few in each. Most people that watch me play say that I bring something immeasurable to the court and my team is better for it. I have worked very hard at basketball and am passionate about skill/strength development and being the best possible player.
However, I bring more to a team. I am an Honors Student, have strong core values and do not drink alcohol, smoke or do drugs. When I am on a team and on the court, there is no excess baggage and my focus is very clear. In college, I have continued to earn good grades with a GPA of 3.9+.
I would appreciate it if you would take a look at some comments that have been made about my abilities and approach to playing basketball.
Current Varsity Coach: 1) One of the best motors that I have ever coached, 2) Very good shooter and can score from all 3 levels, 3) Tough and physical, a good rebounder, 4) Plays well with the ball, and off of the ball, 5) Willing and able passer, and 6) Very competitive all of the time.
Current AAU Coach: 1) Greatest strengths are his motor and his ability in the paint, but he has a strong mid-range jump shot and can knock down 3s, 2) Able to defend 4 positions and be physical, 3) Vocal leader on the court and inspires the best of his teammates, and 4) You do not want to miss this player, he is very capable of playing High DII to Low DI.
Other Coaches: 1) Has an ability to move through the paint and score, regardless of the size and skill level of defenders, 2) When he is in the paint, he knows where the basket is at all times, 3) Sam is an expert at moving his body, protecting the ball and finding lanes and/or open teammates, and not losing his pivot foot, 4) Sam does not flash athleticism, but he competes against and beats the best in the game, and 5) When he drives the paint, you cannot tell if he is right or left-handed.
Media: 1) Good motor and high effort on the defensive end, and 2) Scrappy guard that has a knack for putting the ball in the basket off the dribble.
Thank you,
Sam Rex
