Personal Statement- Basketball
I was provided the opportunity to move up to the varsity team when I was in the 8th grade. Of course I didn't play much, but this experience really shaped me as a basketball player. I didn't just sit on the bench, but instead I studied what the starting point guard did for the team. Ironically, I feel like I grew more that year than any other because I was able to spend time studying every play live. I could spend time alongside that starting point guard and ask him questions, ask him to break things down for me and to work alongside him to grow. The following year, my 9th grade year, I started as a shooting guard and backup point guard and our team ended up winning the TCAL 1A State Championship that year. My sophomore year was a great learning experience for me because we graduated several seniors so we were very young with only one junior and the rest of the team was freshmen and sophomores. I was one of the most experienced players on the team despite my youth so I had to learn to command and control our young team. As the starting point guard, I had to learn to slow the game down when teams tried to speed us up or give my young teammates advice on what they could've done in a certain play to get a better outcome. Though we did not win a State Championship that year, we did place 3rd overall in our division. All of these experiences helped me to grow not only as an athlete, basketball player but most importantly a leader.
I have been blessed to be a part of an amazing basketball program with a wonderful coaching staff, but also an exceptional school community that has taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. I believe that my work ethic and commitment to greatness are characteristics that will allow me to be successful in college both academically and athletically.
